i welcome you to the first presidential debate between president barack obama and the republican nominee mitt romney. this debate and the next three are sponsored by the commission on presidential debates. tonight's 90 minutes will be about domestic issues and will follow a format designed by the commission. there will be six 15-minute segments with two-minute answers for the first question then open discussion for the remainder of the segment. thousands of people offered suggestions on questions via the internet and other means. i made the final selections. they were not submitted for approval to the commission or the candidates. the segments will be three on the economy -- one each on health care, the role of goverment, and governing. there will be an emphasis throughout on differences, specifics, and choices. both will have two-minute closing statements. the audience has promised to remain silent. no cheers, applause, or other noisy, distracting things so we may concentrate on what the candidates have to say. there is a noise exception right now as we welcome president obama and gover

self-creation is a very important word to obama. in the one of the earliest speeches about abraham lincoln, it was announcement speech of his presidential candidacy in 2007. it was done in bring field, he found out indication to compare himself to abraham lincoln. both of them were tall, gangly lawyers, and both gave speeches in springfield. [laughter] but if you look at what he says about lincoln, it's quite revealing for for him lincoln stands for self-creation. the ability to restart your life to make yourself to whatever you want to be. to choose your own values and pursue your own dreams. your own principles. i'm not sure that's how ab lam hin con would have seen himself. that's in keeping with the general liberal approach. you're not so much concerned with how someone like washington or lincoln understood himself, you're interested in what use you can make of them in in your own time primarily. well, here is where obama goes far beyond old fashion liberalism. comes close to doubting the inevitable of progress. doubts there are

i mean you got the vice presidential debate coming up next week. how does he make up for what he-- missed opportunity. >> well, staircase humor in the debate he has to say, did -- he should have said, and mitt romney, are you right, he not appearing before 60 or 70 million people. the president did not play to offense or defense wednesday night. he didn't defend himself against charges that mitt romney made of his administration that have been fact checked time and again on the president's side. and he didn't play offense. he didn't give a sense where he wanted to go. judy, vice presidential debate does matter because the democrats can't lose two in a row. they really can't. i think joe biden is in a stronger position because he has spent a lot of time, four years, defending, explaining and making the case for barack obama whereas paul ryan is in an awkward position. he's going to defend, make the case to mitt romney whom he has basically been joined to the hip at six weeks ago. and you know, he's got the whole independent political identity himsel
